Marilyn Alberta Long of Salisbury, Maryland passed away on Monday, November 23rd. She was 72 years old and full of life, despite numerous health limitations. Marilyn was born in Washingtonville, Ohio on April 22, 1943 to Albert Delmont Weikart and Selma Kautz Weikart. Her younger sister, Connie Jean Corliss of Salem, Ohio, wife of Glenn F. Corliss, was born four years later. Their adolescent years were spent in rural bliss: picking flowers for fun and fruit for pocket money; spending time with family and relatives on weekends; marching band and friends at school. After graduating high school, Marilyn headed for the big city to attend nursing school at Saint Luke’s of Cleveland. It was while earning her RN that she met her future husband, Charles Kenneth Long. They were married in 1967. Their marriage lasted until the untimely death of “Chas” in 1999. Marilyn and Charlie had their first child, Christopher Kevin Long, 48, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, in late 1967. Christopher is married to Jody Ann Long, who blessed Marilyn with two beloved grandsons: Aidan Charles Long, 12, and Nolan Christopher Long, 10. Their younger son, Andrew Kenneth Long, 45, was born three years later. Andrew, his wife Virginia Lynn Peterson, and their puppy Charley all live in Evergreen, Colorado. In the early 1970s, the Longs relocated to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Charlie began his teaching career at Wilson College, while Marilyn raised two young sons and earned a B.A. – and membership into Phi Beta Kappa – at Wilson. In 1979, Charlie and Marilyn made their final big move, to Salisbury. Charlie taught Education at Salisbury University, while Marilyn continued to raise their children. As the kids got older, she became more active in her adopted community both professionally and socially. Career highlights include: serving as a hospice nurse at Deer’s Head and with Coastal Hospice; trying her hand as a school nurse at Pemberton Elementary; and, ultimately, working to address the needs of the elderly and disabled as an administrator at SHORE UP! Inc. On the personal front, Marilyn (“Saint Marilyn” to her husband’s colleagues) returned to her musical roots, picking up first the mountain dulcimer, then the hammered dulcimer. Marilyn and Charlie went on to form an old-time music band, The String Dusters, with Frank Nanna of Berlin, MD. They released two CDs, but more importantly, helped foster a local music scene best summed up by the title of their second release: Thursday Night at Marilyn’s. Marilyn’s noble passions defined her life: her love of family; her commitment to her equally selfless and compassionate friends; her belief in humanity and desire to make the world a better, more just place. She also cherished her down time, which she filled with reading, knitting, building miniatures, going out to dinner and the movies, and keeping up with friends and family both in person and online. Marilyn is survived by all of those who were touched by her kindness: her two boys and their wives; her grandchildren; her sister, Connie, her two nieces, Amy and Heather, and their children Sydney and Gage; and most importantly, the friends, and caregivers that became friends, who were there for her on every step of this magnificent journey. A funeral service will be held Monday, November 30, 2015 at 11:00 am at Holloway Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made either to: SHORE UP! Inc., c/o Freddie Mitchell, Executive Director, 520 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804; or the Humane Society of Wicomico County, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, MD 21804.
